Harbour Cancer Support Wins £500 cash for their cause!

14 September 2023

Gosport Community Lottery was launched in June 2018 for the people, by the people and to help to continue to make Gosport the best place to live. It has gone from strength to strength, with over 73 local good causes reaping the benefits - it’s FREE and easy to register to fundraise with the community lottery.

A ‘Win £500 cash for your cause’ bonus draw was arranged in celebration of the community lottery’s 5th anniversary. The lucky winner is Harbour Cancer Support!

Here is what Harbour Cancer Support had to say when they heard the good news:

Your position at the cause? Charlie Reilly, Funding Consultant.

Tell us a bit about your cause and the work you carry out within the community: Harbour Cancer Support is an independent charity based in Gosport that offers Free practical and emotional support to any person who has been affected by any cancer.

Our services include; Counselling, befriending, support for children, complementary therapies, drop in centre, information services, art therapy group, knit and natter group, coffee mornings

Harbour Cancer Support is a locally based charity which provides practical and emotional support to anyone affected by any cancer within the South East Hampshire area. Support is offered to the patient and their families including young children along with friends and carers who can often feel excluded. Sadly statistics show that one in three people in the UK will get cancer meaning we will be affected at some time in our lives by this cruel disease.

A cancer diagnosis whether personal or that of a loved one can impact greatly on a person’s health and emotional well-being.  It can be difficult to process the news and deal with the practical implications of a diagnosis, Harbour Cancer Support is here to support them through this time.

Our Centre is located at 2 stoke Road in Gosport and at the centre we offer a warm, relaxing environment for anyone who has been affected by cancer to come and spend time.  The centre also acts as an information point providing detail about all types of cancer and related issues including treatments, hospices, and where to find practical and financial support.  The annual costs of providing our services to local people each year are approximately £85,000 and we work hard every year to raise this amount to ensure we can keep helping people who have been affected by cancer.

How did you hear about the lottery and what made you decide to join?We became part of the Lottery in its early days, what's not to love, Local winners, supporting Local charities & community groups!

What does wining the cash for your cause mean to your cause? Is there a particular project or service you are hoping to raise funds for? Right now, along with many charities post covid & with the national cost of living crisis, fundraising has become harder. However, our small team are dedicated to be able to keep the doors of our amazing support centre open & provide our services for free, so the fundraising pot will be open to any new donations!

How has joining the lottery benefited your cause? It is great to know that we will receive some regular donations, & that there will always be new lottery patrons willing to support us in our local area.

What advice would you give to other causes thinking of joining the lottery?Do it! It's a no brainer, a way to raise extra funds which is promoted by an external organisation, the GVA share the information far and wide!
